Stefan Salvatore

The polar opposite of his brother, Stefan Salvatore is the good guy who feels forever guilty about trying to be the good guy. He strikes me as the martyr and at times he pushes the envelope on that award winning nomination. Stefan is suppose to be the hero of the Vampire Diaries, he’s the Angel (from Buffy) of the new era. Being a vampire is not what he really wanted from life, but since it is his lot then he’s going to do everything he possibly can to make himself a good damned undead (which is almost a contradiction in and of itself.)

Stefan is the guy every girl wants. He’s the mysterious new guy that can unwantingly charm the little panties off of most any girl, which is yet another thing that makes him so appealing. He genuinely feels bad for having such a profound affect on the female sex. He feels bad for wanting to know Elena, he feels guilt for what he did to his brother, and he feels shame for allowing so many others (aka the living) to become a part of his lifestyle.

Stefan grew up the younger brother, the more favored brother. He was never one to flaunt that little fact in his brother’s face, but each time he defended Damon to his father, he only made himself into a better person in their father’s eyes, further infuriarating Damon, which isn’t too terribly difficult.

When Katherine Pierce enters the picture, the two brothers are pitted against each other, when Stefan (again being the martyr) by attempting to bow out in the end for his brother’s sake. The “death” of Katherine at the apparent hands of Stefan have sent Damon on a long quest to torture his brother in this eternity and the next and Stefan seems perfectly content at times to accept that very fate.
